Meat is important for cats, as they are “obligate carnivores” which means they get all their essential nutrients from it. Cat’s systems are not able to digest plant matter and carbohydrates, which is the main ingredient in dry cat food. All dry cat food is filled with carbohydrate or plant-based ingredients, making it hard for cats to digest it. Dry cat food is hard on feline gut health, and strips the gut of healthy bacteria, making a cat more susceptible to food sensitivities and irritable bowel issues.
Providing as much moisture as possible to cat’s diet is essential. Cats gain most of their daily water intake from their food. A lack of moisture in a cat’s diet can lead to urinary and kidney issues. Raw and canned cat food is an optimal way for cats to get that essential water in their diet.
Let’s say your cat is picky, all you have to do is start slow and try a good shredded meat or a fish based can and offer a small serving of dry food or their favorite treat sprinkled on top. The goal is to slowly cut back on dry food and increase canned food until their diet is comprised of canned food only. It is important to note that dry food can contribute to picky behavior in cats. The less dry food you offer your cat, the more likely your cat will be open to trying canned foods or raw.
Here are some tips to switching your cat off dry food
- Structure Mealtime – free feeding is not recommended for cats. Select two set feeding times per day, and split serving size between two meals.
- Cut Down Serving size – Feed what is suggested on back of the dry food bag. Cats that overeat can choose to be picky. Your cat should have a healthy appetite for meals, and they will not be ‘too hungry’ if you scale back their food to appropriate feeding amounts.
- Offer One Meal a Day of Canned Food – Swap out a daily dry food meal for a meal with canned food. You can add a few kibbles on top to coax them to eat it.
- Try a Variety of Cans – Just because your cat does not like one brand of chicken canned food does not mean they will not like another brand. Different brands have different textures such as pates, flaked or shredded, and some have added fish oils which are used to enhance palatability.
- If You Find a Canned Food Your Cat Loves, Find More! – do not settle with just one favorite can. The more variety of cans you introduce to your cat, the less picky they will become. Cats are easily bored by food, so mixing it up as much as possible is a good way to curb picky eaters. You can do a different can every meal!
