Let’s talk about the weather.
Adhesive. It’s tempramental. It can misbehave. And it changes systematically depending on the weather. If you live in a climate where humidity gauges change depending upon the season (here, in our seafaring town, we have wet summers and bone-dry winters), you’ve probably already noticed how the weather impacts your process.
Cyanoacrylate, or the chemical compound that is responsible for the stickiness in our adhesive, cures when it comes into contact with moisture. With too much moisture in the air, the adhesive becomes thick and stringy and may rapidly dry on your dispensary surface. The adhesive sitting on the dipped lash can also form a shell, or skin, before it even reaches the natural lash. This means that, during high humidity months, lash retention can go down significantly.
Low humidity presents its own set of problems, such as slow set time, cross bonding, lashes falling to the side, or fans falling apart while waiting for a hold. For optimal use, the adhesive needs to be used in an environment that is neither too humid nor too dry. This may mean keeping both a humidifier and a dehumidifier on hand. If you’re doing extensions in a salon, we also recommend an air purifier, to reduce cross-contamination from the ammonia and peroxide used from hair coloring.
Speaking of hair coloring, if you are doing lash extensions in a salon setting, because of the aforementioned ammonia and peroxide, its best to use a quick-set or thin consistency adhesive so that the adhesive does not gum up, as it is might do when it combines with the chemicals in the air. The adhesive is impacted by the chemicals in hair dye, much in the same way as impacted by the volume of water in the air.
So how do you combat those tricky, sticky elements? Step number one: Get a humidity gauge so you know what your baseline is. When you have reached your perfect levels, you can monitor their consistency. We like the AcuRite digital humidity gauge (link: http://www.amazon.com/AcuRite-00613A1-Indoor-Humidity-Monitor/dp/B0013BKDO8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413240883&sr=8-1&keywords=humidity+gauge). Some humidifiers will come equipped with their own gauge. These gauges can sometimes be a bit off, since most of the ambient moisture will be strongest directly surrounding the unit. It’s best to put your new gauge at the opposite end of your bed so that you can find the true humidity.
We recommend 40-50 percent humidity for lash application, depending on your specific adhesive. You will have to play around to find your perfect number, as all climates and areas of the world may differ, in addition to the temperament of each and every adhesive formula. You may find that your number falls outside of this range.
Steer clear of quick fixes, like using your facial steamer. This may be a way to bump humidity up in a pinch (if, for instance, you don’t have time in the morning to get your humidity up before your first client arrives), but this method is short-lived and inconsistent. Our sources report that the best humidifier on the market when the going gets dry is the Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic Warm and Cool Mist Humidifier (link: http://www.amazon.com/Air-O-Swiss-AOS-7147-Ultrasonic-Humidifier/dp/B004FO9P8U/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1413168903&sr=8-3&keywords=air-o-swiss). This little guy automatically regulates the output to create the most comfortable relative humidity adjusted to the temperature in your room. The fine mist created by the ultrasonic mechanism brings up your humidity without causing the air to feel “wet.” Cool mist for summer, warm mist for winter? Fancy! Other similar humidifiers that are just cool mist can be a bit chilly if your dry months are winter months. The warm setting is not intended actually to warm your room, but simply not to cool it, as the cool setting has a tendency to do.
For those heavy, humid months, the best dehumidifier that we’ve found is the Frigidaire Energy Saver 70-pint (link: http://www.amazon.com/Frigidaire-FAD704DWD-Energy-70-pint-Dehumidifier/dp/B00AU7GZXE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413240031&sr=8-1&keywords=frigidaire+dehumidifier). It comes with an extra long three-pronged cord, so you won’t have to worry about an extension cord, and it’s also an air purifier, eliminating bacteria in the air. The humidity control setting allows you to control the exact percentage of humidity in the room.
