Ready for Winter?
Colder weather will soon be here and if you are considering replacing old, drafty windows or doors now is a great time to start your research and planning. You would think that choosing windows and doors for your home would be an easy task.
However, there are actually a surprising number of options from which to
choose, everything from window styles to frame materials and even the type of glass.
The first steps to buying new windows or doors is to determine your needs, design, budget and window/door functions. Window and Door purchases are a big commitment so you’ll want to be sure that you make the right decision. This is where KBK Woodworking & Remodeling can help. We do a lot of window and door installations and are experts at ensuring that your replacement windows or doors match your needs and budget.
Window Types
Windows are available in wood, aluminum, vinyl, and fiberglass. Wood frames are a common choice for remodels and can be bought to match existing windows if you aren’t planning on replacing all of them. Wood window sashes can be replaced to update a drafty window, but they require a bit more maintenance. Still, they offer a classic look, so for an older home to retain it’s original style, wood windows are often the only option.
Our preference is Andersen but other manufactuers offer a wide variety of products that fit most needs.
What does R-Value Mean?
R-values of windows indicate the energy efficiency of building materials in insulation and windows. Higher R-values mean better insulating properties. A clear single-pane window has an R-value of 1, while quality double-pane windows can have an R-value as high as 4.0 when coupled with low-e glass and gas filling. Triple-pane windows are in the 5-7 R-value range.
Conversely, U-factor is the rate at which a window, door or skylight conducts non-solar heat flow. The lower the U-factor, the more energy-efficient the window, door, or skylight.
If you buy an Energy Star rated window, check for available tax credits.
