Burp that baby!
Lash adhesives can be temperamental, finicky and well…act like a baby sometimes! Ever wonder why even though your tip is perfectly clean after dispensing that you open your cap again to find gunk built up all around the end? This can lead to a decreased air tight seal that will shorten your adhesives life, a clogged nozzle that has to be poked open creating a hazard or the dreaded stuck cap!
First things first, when you go to dispense your adhesive turn your bottle fully upside down as if dispensing an eye drop. Holding your adhesive to the side and dispensing will cause the bottle to sip in a tiny bit of air. Air= Moisture. Moisture = gummy adhesives that don’t last. Dispensing with your bottle completely tipped will reduce the amount of unwanted air in the bottle and any adhesive that may drip down the side. Dispense small droplets at a time. Because the adhesive will develop a “skin” of sorts as it begins to dry, if you dispense a large amount of adhesive and dip into the top you may be scoping up some of this partially set adhesive and there for not achieving the best bond possible for longevity. Always dip in the center top of your bead, like a cake baking in the oven the edges of your bead will dry quicker and the center will stay moist. It is to dispense smaller droplets more often than one large droplet that may partially cure on the surface and waste product. (Read blog on retention trouble shooting and preserving adhesive)
One you have dispensed the proper amount of adhesive onto your palate, adhesive ring, jade stone etc. it’s time to burp the baby! This is done by taking a small makeup sponge, (available in our store) or another other NON cotton based wipe. Holding it to the tip, give a small slow squeeze to get the adhesive that may still be sitting in the nozzle and wipe upward and away. Also wipe away any excess from around the edges. Tap the adhesive lightly against your table to drop out any remaining adhesive from the tip, so you are sure the entire tip is free of adhesive. Replace your cap ASAP. Try to avoid pushing too hard when burping and causing your bottle to suck back air as this will also affect your adhesives longevity. Just a slow controlled push then recap immediately.
If you do not do this after EVERY time you dispense, adhesive will begin to build up and cause lots of problems. Even if you are simply wiping the nozzle this will happen as the extra adhesive lingering in the tip will inevitably ooze upwards into the top of your cap if left to sit and not “burped” out. Ha! Mystery solved!
*WARNING* Because Cyanoacrylate can react with cotton to create noxious fumes or even ignite PLEASE use extreme caution to not accidently spray adhesive out of your nozzle into the pad when burping and do not use cotton. This is a very light controlled movement using a light pressure, it is not meant to cause settled adhesive to rise up the tip but only the limbo drop caught in the tip to come out.
Sooooo you’ve maybe read this article too late and have already got yourself in a pickle. To un-stick a stuck tip follow these instructions.
Tip is fully clogged and no adhesive will dispense. :
WARNING: DO NOT JUST SQUEEZE HARD! This is the most dangerous thing you can do as a lash artist! Pressing and squeezing to un clog your tip could result in a blow out! Your tip may fly off and adhesive will spurt out. Best case you will destroy your linens and bed sheets, worst case you may seriously burn yourself or your client, get adhesive in their hair, or cause a fire! If for some reason this does happen DO NOT reach for cotton or paper towels, use water to cure the adhesive and stop the heat curing response. After the adhesive has rapidly cured it turns white and at that point you could use pure acetone or adhesive remover to remove it from your skin or a client’s hair. (Please read our other article on cyanoacrylate safety and creating a safety plan)
ASAP fix: In a jam you may want to use a safety pin or T pin (LINK) to quickly make a hole so as not to run behind with your client but be ULTRA careful not to hurt yourself! You may have to cut your tip and plan to replace it completely when able if you cannot push through the tip easily with a sharp object.
Best fix: You should plan to have some extra nozzles (LINK) on hand in case this happens BUT if not you can gently pry your tip off by using a sharp thin knife. Place the blade the long way (not the point) between the cap and the bottle. Push the handle down and then pull up like a sea saw to pry off the tip. Replace the cap immediately. Take your clogged tip and soak it in acetone to remove residue and then let it air dry thoroughly before replacing so as not to contaminate your bottle when replacing.
Stuck Cap:
Boo. This is a big BOO! It entirely depends on the type of adhesive you have and how stuck the cap is weather this is considered a total loss scenario.
Quick fix:
If you can twist off the cap and the nozzle comes up out of the bottle, leaving a large opening take a tooth pick or the end of a wooden q tip (LINK) and dip it into the adhesive then draw out without wiping and dot onto your palate. Pouring adhesive out of the bottle will inevitably result in too much adhesive dispensed
You may also take an extra cap (possibly form an un opened spare adhesive) or saran wrap and cover the opening and secure with an elastic band. USE EXTREME CAUTION to not spill your open adhesive when doing so and store the adhesive overnight in a place where it will not be disturbed. Take a pair of needle nose pliers and grip the lip of the nozzle and with gloved hand try to twist away the cap. Sometimes a little force can un stick the two and make clean up easier. If not, take your gunky tip/cap combo and soak overnight in acetone to try to dislodge. In the morning use the pliers again to try and dislodge the two. Once separated you may have to soak again to remove any leftover in hard to reach spots and again rinse and let dry completely before replacing your new clean tip and cap.
