Eyes are sensitive spots, so it’s easy to worry when something seems off. People with lash extensions—particularly those wearing them for the first time—often mistakenly blame a problem like a broken blood vessel on the lashes.
The good news: Many things can cause broken blood vessels, but lashes are not one of them. Lashes also won’t irritate a broken blood vessel. You can keep your lashes and continue to look fabulous—despite a little redness—while the eye heals.
What Causes Broken Blood Vessels?
A broken blood vessel, also known as a subconjunctival hemorrhage (ew!) happens when a blood vessel breaks underneath the surface of the eye. Broken blood vessels look and sound a lot worse than they are. They’re usually harmless.
Any sort of straining can cause a broken blood vessel. Something as simple as a sneeze or a cough could break a blood vessel. They can also be caused by crying, vomiting, heavy lifting, aggressively rubbing your eye, or being poked in the eye. The only remedy for a broken blood vessel is time, according to the Mayo Clinic. In some cases, they take a week or two to heal. Gross as it sounds, your eye needs time to absorb the blood.
Broken blood vessels are not exactly attractive, but they’re no cause for concern. They very rarely cause pain or symptoms like burry vision, the Mayo Clinic says. At the most, you might feel a small amount of irritation. The only reason to be concerned—or to see a doctor—is if you constantly have broken blood vessels.
The Importance of Cleaning Your Lashes
Even though lash extensions don’t cause broken blood vessels, lashes can lead to eye irritation when they’re not properly cleaned. Just because you’re not wearing mascara doesn’t mean the lashes don’t need to be cleaned.
Failing to clean your lashes can lead to a host of problems, including damage to your natural lashes, Blepharitis, which causes flaky skin, redness and irritation along the lash line, or worse, lash mites (again, ew).
You can start washing your lashes 12 hours after they’re applied. Wash them daily using both an approved makeup remover (we recommend Novalash Lash Clean) and your regular facial cleanser. Make sure you wash along the lash line, and never wear makeup overnight. Be gentle, but don’t worry if you lose a couple lashes. Lashes will naturally fall out over time, and skipping cleanings is not worth the risk.
