Veterans tip of the Week
Education is Forever, and Forever is Better!
I am a big advocate for veterans using their earned VA benefits! One of
the best benefits out there is the Post 9/11 GI Bill, and it just got
better!
The Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act, more commonly
know and the Forever GI Bill, has over 20 different updates, changes,
improvements and new initiatives for the Post 9/11 GI Bill. It makes an
already fantastic benefit and makes it better.
There are many changes worth looking into, but the BIG 3 are:
- Restoration of entitlement for students affected by school closures
and certain disapproved courses. This can be significant if you had the
bottom fall out of the program you were in.
- Elimination of the 15 year time limit to use the benefit – now it is
truly forever, great if you transferred your earned benefit to your
younger children.
- Can add an additional 9 months’ worth of entitlement for Science,
Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) programs – this covers a lot of
different majors and fits perfectly with those 5-year bachelor to master
degree programs, common in STEM degree programs.
There are many other changes worth looking into, from expansion of the
Transfer of Benefits and how BAH is calculated, to consolidation of
benefit levels (dropped 40%, but made 50% and 60% levels broader), and
may others.
Here are a few quick links to take a look for yourself. With fall
semesters starting soon, NOW is a great time to get yourself in gear and
get enrolled in school. You can use the Post 9/11 GI bill for adult
degree programs, and receive full benefits as long as you are considered
full time by the requirements of the program you are. Many schools
have programs designed for working adults. No excuses!

your VA Benefits. If I don’t know the answer, we will find it together.
