Comments:
Lash extensions might be our bread and butter, but lash serums are an important part of the market, too. Clients with damaged or thinning lashes can benefit from serum use, which can help strengthen and lengthen their natural lashes, thereby making your job easier and their results better and longer lasting. Serums can—and should—be used in conjunction with lash extensions. Read these reviews and tips, however, since some serums work better than others for clients with extensions. Below are our reviews of some of the most effective lash serums on the market today, along with some helpful hints for serum use.
PRODUCTS:
Latisse
Latisse has the largest number of side effects, ranging from darkening along the lash line to hairs growing along the lid to discoloration of the eye itself in light eyes. Because of these side effects, we tend to favor some of the alternate brands over Latisse, although Latisse still has big results when it comes to lash length and volume. The instructions say to use one applicator per eye to prevent cross contamination and one month’s supply is provided. Users say that the brushes are a bit stiff and not so precise for a product with such strict placement requirements. It is also reported that there is more than enough product to use for longer than a month and the product can be extended by breaking the rules and using one brush for both eyes. http://www.latisse.com/
Revitalash (Nourishe)
This heavy hitter has gone by the wayside in the eyes of the consumer lately, which may be due to its new formulation after a recent lawsuit with Latisse. Latisse claimed their formula was too similar, though I sold Revitalash to my clients years before Latisse ever hit the market. Regardless, it has fewer side effects than its prescription rival, an easy-to-use thin applicator, and receives many positive reviews. Some benefits toted by the brand are its high impact Biopeptin Complex, a unique agent to help the product stay put without running, and a powerful cosmetic antimicrobial system, allowing for repeated use of a single applicator.
Rapid Lash
Rapid Lash is another big name and is a heavily reviewed and recommended product. It is special because of its active ingredient “Isopropyl Cioprostenate,” which is not actually new; it has been used in Europe for over a decade. Out of all the eyelash enhancers on the market, there are only three that have Isopropyl Cioprosrenate—NueLash (which is also a nice serum), RevitaLash, and RapidLash. Most others use heavy moisturizers to temporarily plump up the lashes. However, products containing Isopropyl Cioprosrenate are proven actually to add length and fullness to eyelashes and brows. In a blind study conducted by Consumer Labs and an independent clinical trial sponsored by RapidLash, RapidLash performed an average of 88% better than Nuelash and RevitaLash. The reason for this high performance is that it contains significantly more Isopropyl Cioprostenate—about 27% more.

Xtreme’s Amplifeye
This prostaglandin-free formula is good for those who are ingredient wary, or who have damaged lash lines that require nourishment and repair, but, unfortunately, you won’t get much length from this serum. While Amplifeye will give you fuller, darker lashes—a plus for many—you will need either prosaglandin or prostamide in your growth serum for eyelash length. This serum function better as a deep conditioner to provide a healthy environment for your natural lashes to grow to their fullest potential. Botanicals, amino acids, and a plethera of peptides rejuvenate the follicles. http://www.amazon.com/Xtreme-Lash-Amplifeye-Eyelash-Fortifier/dp/B008FQLJM4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413246528&sr=8-1&keywords=amplifeye
GrandeLash MD
Reviews for GrandeLash are glowing, and they offer a discount for wholesale buying. The serum has a reputation for extending lashes, but results do taper after time, once the body becomes accustomed to it. Also, five to 10 percent of users have an allergy to this product, so be prepared to deal with a possible allergic reaction. As with Latisse and other products that have prostaglandins in them, GrandeLash can cause lid darkening, although it appears to have fewer and less frequent side effects. The company has a reputation for being very easy to do business with. http://www.amazon.com/GrandeLASH-Eyelash-Enhancer-Fullness-Darkness/dp/B00325D0WK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413246556&sr=8-1&keywords=grande+lash+md
Talika Lipocils Expert
This naturally based product gets some of the top ratings online and is a personal favorite of mine, so I will have to give my biased personal review. This product is a light clear gel, and comes in a hefty size that easily lasts six months. I advise clients to throw it away at that point as it loses its potency. This product will stay wet for a long time, so clients will still continue to milk one tube, but the product will turn a darker amber color after spoiling. It’s only good for classic lashes, due to its primary applicator being a mascara wand, which would close up volume fans if combed through. It does have a little lip gloss tip on the end that can go along the skin, but it is not terribly precise. The light gel works great to hold lashes in place, put a nice shine on them after makeup application, and keep the bond flexible and conditioned. The growth is not crazy; it’s maybe not one that your non-extension wearers would choose (though hundreds of reviewers on Amazon alone rate it five stars); yet it wont require your clients to come early for fills due to grow out or cause lashes to criss-cross. http://www.amazon.com/Talika-8920-Lipocils-Expert/dp/B003H67R96/ref=sr_1_1?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1414121081&sr=1-1&keywords=lipocils+expert+talika
Biotin/Horsetail
This is actually a vitamin treatment, 10 mg (or 10,000 mcg) of B7 per day, along with 440 mg of Horsetail for the first two weeks, which should be increased to 880 mgs thereafter. This treatment can cause clients to have breakouts, which can be remedied by the addition of Saw Palmetto (160 mg/day). This is the most natural option, and is especially good for clients who are hesitant about starting a lash regimen. Biotin has the additional effect of strengthening hair and nails. http://www.amazon.com/Natrol-Maximum-Strength-Tablets-100-Count/dp/B004H7GB9G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413246650&sr=8-1&keywords=biotin and http://www.amazon.com/Horsetail-Grass-440-60-Caps/dp/B003HM8C1W/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1413246682&sr=8-6&keywords=swanson+horsetail
TIPS:
Weaning
Make sure to let your clients know that if they don’t wean off of their growth serum slowly they will suffer a big lash shed. Growth products send messages for lashes that would otherwise have fallen out to stay in the follice. When these lashes stop receiving this message, they shed all at once. They eventually return on the following cycle, but during the month of their mass shed, the result can be disturbing.
Fills
Clients who are getting lash extensions might require more frequent fills if they are using a growth serum with extensions, since their lashes will grow out faster than usual. Some people report needing a fill as frequently as every week until they hit their max growth potential. Another side effect of using a growth serum with extensions is excessively curly lashes or lashes that “basket weave” or criss-cross due to the prostaglandins in some of the serums on the market. This won’t happen in all cases, but you should make your clients aware of this possibility and that it can cause the lashes to be difficult to extend and may be wild at fill time as they follow the unruly new lashes.
Lash Fatigue
Lash follicles often tire from one lash serum. This fatigue can be remedied by switching prodcucts, but let your clients know that they may have to use more than one product in order to achieve the desired result.
Lash Serums Don’t Work on Everyone
Sad, but true. Not everyone will benefit in the same way and that’s why it’s great there is such a variety out there!
Wash It Off At Some Point
Jesh! We all know clients can tend to avoid cleansing the lashes well for fear of lash loss, but if they are going to be applying a product with potentially harsh ingredients to the skin that will be exposed to the cyanoacralate fume, they need to keep this area as clean as can be and free of product build up. No extra effort than their normal daily cleansing should be required.
Volume Don’ts
Don’t put serums through the length of your lashes if you have volume extensions, as this will plaster your poor fans shut and turn your beautiful fluffy set into a spiky mess! Make extra sure with volume to only be going along the base of the lash line.
More Does Not = More
You know the type. Encourage these clients not to over use their new lash growth serum, as applying more than once a day is not recommended and can definitely cause complications, irritation, and more potential side effects!
